CUPE Local 82 was established on September 24, 1963 as the successor to the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE) Local No. 405 – Riverside Public Employees (established in 1955). CUPE Local 82 men and women are the civic employees serving the City of Windsor known as “the outside workers". CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) is the largest union in Canada with over 700, 000 members across the country.
Local 82 members continued to perform regular duties in a variety of departments consisting of: Environmental, Facilities, Forestry, Horticulture, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Waste Water Treatment and Pollution Control but over the last year, many were also redeployed to aid in City’s response to COVID-19. Members were mobilized throughout the entire City to ensure safety and aid the public. Duties ranged from enhanced cleaning services for the Police Station and the temporary homeless shelter, Huron Lodge screening to assisting with the UHC Hub of Opportunities (formerly Unemployed Help Centre) Food Bank and the United Way Summer Eats food program. The community engaged with the membership and valued relationships were further formed. These connections enhance a true sense of community, one that our members value and promote.
It is through the partnership with the City of Windsor the Local was recognized for its multiple acts of in-kind and charitable giving, through volunteerism as well as financial contributions during these trying and precarious times. CUPE Local 82 members are truly dedicated to serving the general public within the City of Windsor and neighbouring towns and are looking forward to doing so for many years to come.
As one of the backbones providing city services, CUPE Local 82 wishes the entire community a safe and enjoyable Labour Day, 2021!!!
All the best………………………
