Labour Day 2021 - UNIFOR 200

It’s been one hell of a year with the challenges dealing with the pandemic the elections now here and chip shortages. The members of local 200 showed solidarity throughout all these challenges this is a small caption in the last year.

Ford Bargaining

What we accomplished in this round of bargaining at Ford, FCA, and General Motors was truly remarkable. What we did was downright historic. But when I say ‘we’ I want to be clear that I mean all of you, the membership. Every single member owns this deal and it’s historic multi-billion dollar investments and its economic benefits. Every single member had a role to play from the shop floor of every single site to the local and master bargaining committees and beyond. These are some of the most substantial investments seen in decades but the fact is that we could never have negotiated one dime without your support, your solidarity, and your dedication.

The historic results of the deal we reached speak for themselves. I am extremely proud that we secured investments and product commitments for all of our sites. That includes the incredible role Tim Little, Kevin Bell, Chad Lawton, and Bob Krizanovic played in securing $148 million for the Essex, Windsor and Annex plants to continued production of Nano cylinder heads, sole sourcing of the 5.0L engine and any derivatives, the 7.3L engine, and a new 6.XL engine. For our PDCs the extraordinary leadership of Rick Andersen and Sheldon Warawa in Red Deer who secured several facility upgrades and in sourcing of work, and Gary Rumboldt and Sandy Knight who successfully protected their members in Bramalea with the leasing of two new facilities in the GTA and Ottawa. And finally, the $1.8 billion investment to retool the Oakville Assembly Complex and produce building Battery Electric Vehicles.

Arbitrator Norm Jesin dismissed our grievance over the violation of our collective agreement in 2019. The three judge panel in Ontario court quashed that decision and the matter was referred back to Jesin, who reversed his decision in favour of Unifor Local 200 members.

Unions across Canada watched this challenge very closely and recognized the importance of Unifor local 200 win. The decision that came down by Norm Jesin let’s corporations know when you sign an agreement and shake hands you better follow through.

I want to thank the Nemak local 200 members for the solidarity throughout this challenge and all the support from our Unifor family and unions throughout Canada and United States.

Penske Bargaining

I want to congratulate Penske Local 200 members on the new collective agreement ratified at 84%.

Your bargaining committee would like to thank all of you for your Solidarity and patience during this round of bargaining. I want to thank your Bargaining Committee Tim Little, Chris Taylor, Joe Tremblay and Paul Georges.

It was not easy to say the least but we were successful in negotiating gains in wages, bonuses, safety shoe allowance, shift premium and for the first time a letter of understanding Supplemental Unemployment Benefit Plan. Once again congrats.

Front Line Workers

How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes. Think of all the essential workers—heath care professionals, grocery clerks, bus drivers, mail carriers, police officers, firefighters, delivery drivers, bank cashiers, farmers, sanitation workers, airline employees, manufacturing workers, and others put their lives on the line for us.

While most of us are being told to stay home and to use social distancing, these workers are front and center, taking care of those affected by the COVID 19 virus and stopping it form those who aren’t.

If you have one of these heroes in your family, friend or see them when getting groceries or dropping off a package at your door, thank them.

I want to recognize the retirees and the sacrifices that were made to give us the opportunity to have good-paying jobs with benefits and vacation. We should never forget the 1945 strike Rand Formula that is near and dear to Local 200 and unions across the globe. So on behalf of local 200 and the executive. Thank you

Labour Day
